We visited sneaker enthusiast, influencer and mother of two Frederikke Toftsø (Fredesblog), for a talk about her journey towards a more responsible lifestyle and how she unites it with her passion for sneakers and fashion.
What do you do in your everyday life that is environmentally responsible?
I have changed a lot of small but specific things in our household. We almost never use disposables, we eat less meat and we prioritize fruit and vegetables in season. I am good at sorting our waste and reuse where I can, and in general I have decided to become a more critical consumer all the way around. That goes for traveling, coffee to go and of course clothes and sneakers. I think it’s hard to establish a criteria about never buying this and that, so instead I look for good quality and something I know I will use and wear. I often look for danish brands or vintage and preloved. I still mispurchase, but not as much as I used to.
What is your three best advice for a more environmentally responsible way of living?
Avoid single-use products when you can. I always have a water bottle with me and I use my own thermal cup for coffee.
Sort your waste - it is the least you can do.
Take good care of your stuff - protect, clean and repair.
When and why did you choose to change your lifestyle and become more environmentally responsible?
After I became a mom. It put my entire consumption into perspective.
What do you look for when consuming responsibly?
I look for sneakers that I know I am gonna wear. For example, I know that I don't like too pointy og too chubby toe boxes - it has to be something in between. I almost never wear black soles and I like colors. With my experience in the sneaker industry and many years as a sneaker enthusiast, I know my personal style very well and it helps me find the sneakers that I love. It's important for me that my sneakers are of a certain quality, both regarding comfort and environment - and it is a plus if they are made from responsible and recycled materials. But most importantly is the design - no matter how responsibly they are produced, it is a waste if I don't wear them.
How do you unite your passion for sneakers and fashion, with your environmentally conscious lifestyle?
I buy less and I take a more critical stand towards my commercial collaborations. I use the same items in my wardrobe and show my followers how to style it and use it again and again. I love love love fashion and adding new styles to my wardrobe and I am by no means a saint, but it has to make sense for me when it comes to my values of becoming a more responsible and aware consumer.
Do you have any personal goals for an even more responsible lifestyle?
Right now I have a challenge with two friends, about who can buy the least amount of clothes in 2022. We read that the population of Denmark has to buy a maximum of 4 pieces of new clothing a year per person, before we even get near something that makes sense. And even though I have bought more than 4 new pieces of clothing this year, it is super intimidating to write down every single new style that goes into my wardrobe, and it creates a much larger awareness and motivation to reduce my consumption even more.
